Apple has launched Apple Pay in India through a partnership with Axis Bank, extending the mobile-payment service to 101 countries and regions nearly 12 years after its initial release. Eligible Axis Bank credit cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks are the first supported cards, while RuPay cards are excluded from the initial rollout. Customers can add cards through the Axis Bank mobile app or Apple Wallet and use an iPhone, Apple Watch or iPad for contactless payments in stores, apps and online. The expansion supports Apple's broader push in India, where it is increasing iPhone production, sales and retail operations. Axis Bank had 16.3 million credit cards outstanding in August, against 124 million nationwide, while India's Unified Payments Interface accounted for 84% of digital-payment volumes, according to a 2025 IMF report. Apple has also discussed partnerships with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank but has not agreed commercial terms.
