Bain Capital is weighing a more than $15 billion acquisition of Edged, a data-center operator owned by Koch Inc., as the private equity firm deepens its presence in the rapidly expanding U.S. AI infrastructure market. Edged currently operates seven data centers and has additional projects in development. Koch Inc. has hired Goldman Sachs and Newmark Group to gauge buyer interest. Bain managing partner David Gross warned late last year that the scale of AI infrastructure investment could amount to a massive arms race. The potential deal comes as U.S. data-center construction spending rises from $9.9 billion in 2021 to $49.7 billion in 2025, with FMI forecasting $100.8 billion in annual spending by 2030 and about $397 billion cumulatively over the following five years. Bain launched hyperscale provider scale last April to expand its digital infrastructure presence across EMEA and has invested in data-center developer Crusoe and operator DC Blox through its credit arm. Its U.S. investments have largely focused on companies supporting data-center efficiency, including Nutanix and Coherent Corp. Existing reporting said Edged was co-founded in 2024 by Koch Real Estate Investments and Jakob Carnemark, operates more than 388 megawatts across five U.S. metro areas, and emphasizes waterless cooling and a PUE rating of about 1.15.
