The Hang Seng Index fell 0.3%, or 83 points, to 24,440 on Wednesday, extending its losses even as most Asian markets rebounded. Investors remained cautious because the outlook for US interest rates was uncertain, US Treasury yields stayed elevated and China was due to release a busy slate of economic data. The decline came despite improving signals from mainland China: the official manufacturing purchasing managers' index rose to 50.1 in September from 49.8 in August, returning to expansion territory and indicating stronger factory activity. Investors also focused on targeted credit and mortgage-support measures announced by Beijing on Tuesday ahead of the Oct. 1-7 holiday. Tencent fell 0.8%, China Resources Land dropped 2.9% and Akeso declined 2.6%, while Z.AI Co. gained 5.0% and MiniMax rose 3.5%.
