Naver Webtoon said the April shutdown of NewToki, described as South Korea’s largest illegal webtoon site, was followed by a sharp increase in legitimate purchases and revenue for affected titles. A Toon Radar Report released on the 1st, based on January-to-August data, found that purchases of titles whose latest paid episodes had been leaked on release day reached 7.9 times the average of the preceding three weeks immediately after the shutdown; 96% of those readers had previously followed the titles. Revenue rose 29.7% in the next three weeks and a further 11.9% in the following three weeks. The company also said Toon Radar maintained a 99.8% defense rate against leaks of the latest paid episodes, while government blocking measures and international enforcement reduced piracy activity.
