Prices for 3,153 food and beverage items in Japan are set to increase in October, extending pressure on household budgets from higher packaging and import costs. The rises follow increases affecting 4,965 items in September, making this the first time in three years and three months that more than 3,000 items have faced price hikes for two consecutive months, Teikoku Databank Ltd. said. Higher crude oil and naphtha prices linked to the worsening Middle East conflict have raised packaging costs, while the weaker yen has increased import prices, prompting companies to pass costs on to consumers.
