Ripple and its payment operations director Rene Huijsen are no longer listed as members of the Bank for International Settlements’ Cross-border Payments Interoperability and Extension (PIE) task force, with the change recorded by July 2024. Ripple joined the task force in 2023 for the 2023-2025 term and said it is not currently involved in partnerships or working groups with the BIS. The BIS has not disclosed further details about the change. The development comes as questions persist over a BIS working paper that tested a data-verification prototype on the XRP Ledger, or XRPL, using its fee-free DevNet. The paper described XRPL as a proof of concept because of its low fees, fast finality, developer resources and existing technical research, while saying the approach was blockchain-agnostic and could be redirected to another ledger. Ripple has commercial interests in XRPL and holds billions of XRP. The BIS has said its research is not an endorsement of a commercial provider, while unanswered questions remain about Ripple’s role in the paper, any relationship between Ripple and d-fine Austria GmbH, and why previous XRPL outages were not discussed.
