LS Cable & System will invest 150 billion Korean won in Korea Motion Works, a newly established subsidiary, to enter the rare earth permanent magnet business and build a factory in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. The company decided at a board meeting on the 29th to acquire 150 million common shares for 150 billion Korean won, with the investment scheduled in installments from October to December. Korea Motion Works was established this month and is undergoing incorporation into the LS Group. Rare earth permanent magnets, which use elements such as neodymium and samarium, are used in electric-vehicle drive motors, humanoid robots, wind-power generators and defense equipment including fighter jets and radars. Their production and processing remain highly dependent on China, increasing the importance of non-Chinese supply chains amid U.S.-China tensions and China’s export controls on rare earth elements.
