Bitcoin’s onchain yield market remains small despite widespread tokenization, with just 104,105 BTC deployed in productive strategies as of Sept. 20. The amount represents roughly $8.7 billion and about 0.52% of circulating supply, leaving more than 99% of bitcoin outside yield-generating DeFi (decentralized finance) strategies. The report frames the opportunity as an $8.4 billion yield market. Wrapped assets including WBTC, cbBTC and tBTC total more than 218,000 BTC-equivalent units, but only about 35% is productively deployed. Lending accounts for 81% of productive BTC, while staking and restaking represent 12%; conventional liquidity provision contributes 5.5% and impermanent-loss-protected models 1.3%. Lending yields average about 0.01% because demand to borrow BTC remains limited, while only about 7,000 BTC is deployed on decentralized exchanges. Yield Basis uses leveraged Curve Cryptoswap positions and automated rebalancing to pursue trading and arbitrage income while limiting impermanent loss. The firm reported $4.32 billion in aggregate activity, $2.4 million in realized yield and about $180,000 in unrealized fee gains for liquidity providers by the end of Q2 2026. Valueverse estimates productive bitcoin could reach 270,000 BTC by 2030 in its base case, or nearly 470,000 BTC under a bullish scenario. The central challenge is persuading long-term holders to put idle bitcoin to work onchain rather than simply increasing tokenization.
