President Donald Trump renewed his call for former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to resign from the Board of Governors after the Fed's Inspector General found no basis for a criminal referral or administrative-misconduct finding in the central bank's renovation project. The 120-page report nonetheless identified extensive management failures that contributed to a roughly $1 billion overrun, lifting the estimated cost of renovating two historic Washington buildings to about $2.4 billion. It said the Fed never established an intended guaranteed maximum price and allowed subcontract awards to raise the project's cost and timeline, including $346 million for plumbing and air conditioning, three times the initial estimate. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh said he would implement the recommendations and hire an independent auditor to verify awarded costs and compliance. Powell, whose term as chair ended in May, has remained a Fed governor amid Trump's long-running campaign for lower interest rates and pressure on the central bank.
