The U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of the Treasury launched the Defaulted Loans Support Center, an online portal for borrowers with defaulted federal student loans to review options, apply for rehabilitation or consolidation, make payments and examine discharge choices through StudentAid.gov. The center is part of the ED-Treasury Federal Student Assistance Partnership and replaces a paper-based process. The Education Department also extended enrollment for a temporary 1-percentage-point interest-rate reduction by three months to Dec. 31 from Sept. 30. Nearly 2 million borrowers have enrolled in autopay, which combines a 0.25-percentage-point standard discount with an additional 0.75-point reduction through June 30, 2028. The benefit applies to eligible Federal Direct Loans originated after July 1, 2012; borrowers already in default must consolidate and enter a new repayment plan before accessing autopay.
