OpenAI and Synopsys have formed a multi-year partnership to develop GPT-Synopsys, an AI model trained for semiconductor design tasks and designed to use Synopsys' electronic design automation tools. Under the agreement, OpenAI will pay Synopsys a training subscription fee, while the companies will share revenue when customers use the product, with payments linked to how much the model improves chip designs. The model is intended to assist with tasks ranging from describing circuits in code-like languages to arranging billions of transistors on silicon, potentially reducing design timelines. Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi said the product will complement rather than cannibalize the company's existing business, and that its output will be checked by traditional Synopsys tools for physical correctness and final sign-off. Synopsys also raised its fiscal 2027 revenue-growth forecast to 15%, above analysts' 11.19% estimate, and its shares rose as much as 7%. The announcement confirms a direct OpenAI-Synopsys relationship after an earlier record treated GPT-Synopsys as an unverified social-media claim. Technical specifications, launch timing, pricing and customer access remain undisclosed. Synopsys has separately offered Synopsys.ai Copilot, introduced on November 15, 2023, and has announced other AI initiatives with AMD, Microsoft and Nvidia. OpenAI's separate chip-development work includes the Jalapeno project with Broadcom.
