Purchases of Naver Webtoon's latest paid episodes increased sharply after South Korea shut down Newtoki, a major illegal webtoon site. A Toon Radar Report released on the 1st, analyzing purchase data from January through August, found that new purchases for titles whose latest episodes had been leaked on release day reached 7.9 times the average of the previous three weeks immediately after Newtoki's April shutdown. Some 96% of those readers had previously followed the titles. Revenue for the affected titles rose 29.7% in the three weeks after the shutdown and another 11.9% in the subsequent three weeks. Naver Webtoon said the results showed that disrupting illegal distribution can return readers to legitimate services and increase creator earnings. Government blocking measures and the company's Toon Radar leak-prevention system also reduced piracy indicators, while overseas operations with government and law-enforcement agencies led to the closure of six sites and the arrest of operators of three of them.
