The Winklevoss twins’ Digital Freedom Fund spent more than $2.9 million on advertising in Ohio’s 2026 Senate race, dividing the money between materials opposing Democrat Sherrod Brown and advertisements supporting Republican Jon Husted. Bloomberg reported that the PAC spent $1.48 million on anti-Brown mailers on September 25 and another $1.48 million supporting Husted, with the materials sent to voters on October 29. The outlay was the fund’s first election spending this year targeting specific candidates. The group held more than $21 million in cash at the start of the 2026 midterm cycle, while previous disclosures identified $21 million from the twins’ venture capital arm and $1 million from Payward, the parent company of crypto exchange Kraken. Fairshake, backed by Coinbase and Andreessen Horowitz, has said it would spend $30 million opposing Brown, while Stand With Crypto, backed by Gemini and others, has endorsed Husted. Fairshake and affiliated groups have committed more than $30 million against Brown, including $11.4 million already spent. Brown, a three-term senator and former chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, has taken a tough regulatory position on crypto. Crypto interests spent about $40 million opposing him in 2024, when he lost his reelection bid, and are again concentrating political funding on his comeback campaign. The renewed effort follows the Senate’s failure to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act after Democrats sought tighter ethics rules addressing potential conflicts involving the Trump family’s crypto businesses. Brown has been polling slightly ahead of Husted despite the opposition spending, and the race could influence future digital-asset regulation.
