Wonil T&I shares reached the KOSDAQ daily upper limit on October 1 as South Korean nuclear and steel pipe stocks rallied after President Donald Trump cited eight reactors and the Alaska LNG pipeline as parts of South Korea’s U.S. investment plan. At 9:47 a.m., Wonil T&I traded at 10,850 Korean won, up 29.94%, or 2,500 won, from the previous session. Doosan Enerbility, KEPCO KPS, Hanyang E&I, Seojeon Electric Machinery, Gangwon Energy, KEPCO E&C and OrbiTech also rose. The Korea-U.S. Nuclear Power Framework provides for up to $120 billion from South Korea’s U.S. investment fund to build eight large reactors, comprising two Korean-designed APR1400 units and six Westinghouse AP1000 units. Construction costs are estimated at $100 billion, with a $20 billion contingency fund. Korean companies are expected to participate in design, equipment, construction and commissioning for the APR1400 units, while their involvement in the AP1000 projects is also set to expand. The projects could provide U.S. references for Korean suppliers and support bids in markets including Europe. KEPCO and KHNP settled an intellectual property dispute with Westinghouse last year, and the agreement is to be amended to permit the two APR1400 units. The APR1400 received U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission design certification in 2019, but site-specific construction and operating permits remain necessary. The reactors are scheduled to be built in stages, beginning with two AP1000 units, although all eight projects have not yet been contracted. Korean companies are also discussing buying a 5% to 10% Westinghouse stake at a 10% discount during its planned initial public offering.
