South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service is overhauling sanctions criteria and review systems for insurance advertising on TV home-shopping and broadcast channels after finding a mis-selling rate of 0.036%, three times the 0.012% rate for other channels. The FSS plans to curb advertisements that exploit consumer anxiety or compensation expectations and work with insurers and industry associations on corrective measures. Broadcast insurance advertising averaged 1,121 spots a day last year, up 66.9% from 672 in 2024, while total airtime increased 65.2% year over year to 57 hours. The 13th-month persistency rate was 79.3% for broadcast sales versus 86.3% through other channels, and buyers aged 70 and over accounted for 13.4% of broadcast-sold policies, compared with 7.4% elsewhere.
