Woori Bank has marked 30 years in Bangladesh, where it was the first South Korean bank to establish operations and has supported Korean companies’ growth. Local customers now represent 73% of its client base, up from a predominantly corporate focus, giving the bank what it describes as a stable business foundation. Woori operates nine branches and sub-branches with 147 employees and is the only bank from South Korea, Japan or China still operating in the market. Operating revenue grew an average 24% annually over the past three years, while net operating revenue reached 23 billion won ($16 million) in the first half of this year. The bank has expanded mobile-only deposit products and participated in developing Bangladesh’s national standard QR payment system. CEO Jung Jin-wan also met Mostakur Rahman, governor of Bangladesh Bank (Bangladesh’s central bank), to discuss deeper financial cooperation following the Korea-Bangladesh Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement signed in August.
