South Korea is accelerating site preparation for the Yongin System Semiconductor Cluster National Industrial Complex in Gyeonggi Province, where Samsung Electronics plans to build six chip plants. The Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) aims to complete the initial preparation by November next year, ahead of the original end-2028 target, after a request from Samsung. LH will sign a construction contract with a Daewoo Engineering & Construction-led consortium this month and start work in the priority zone two months earlier than planned. The first section covers 3.45 million square meters and involves handling about 50 million tons of soil and rock. The project includes blasting and leveling a mountain, with the consortium planning simultaneous blasting at 13 locations, additional hauling routes and parallel processing of logging, heritage surveys, compensation, permits and construction. The broader complex remains planned for completion by 2040 and will include Samsung’s foundry and memory facilities alongside power, water, wastewater, housing, transport and commercial infrastructure. Compensation procedures have advanced across 99% of privately owned land subject to compensation, while safety measures will include collision-prevention systems, four-legged robots and drones. LH President Lee Sung-hoon said the agency was running procedures in parallel to accelerate the national project.
