Institutional interest in stablecoins and blockchain-based financial infrastructure is expanding, according to Guy Wuollet, a general partner at a16z Crypto, and Matt Hougan, Bitwise’s chief investment officer. Speaking at the a16z Crypto Korea Summit in Seoul on Oct. 1, Wuollet identified financial-market infrastructure, stablecoin-based digital finance and new exchanges as key investment themes. He said traditional assets are increasingly traded on blockchain networks and that stablecoins are expanding beyond payments and remittances into dollar savings, lending and other banking services. Separately, after speaking with about 40 global financial advisers, Hougan said advisers showed greater interest in stablecoins and tokenization than in Bitcoin as a speculative investment, focusing on practical applications rather than price charts. He described stablecoins as the dollar-like transaction medium needed for tokenized assets. Wuollet also discussed prediction markets, machine-to-machine transactions and South Korea’s potential role as institutional participation grows, saying the opportunity from possible won stablecoin legislation and broader adoption remains underappreciated.
