South Korea expects to add more than 10 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity annually from next year as it accelerates deployment toward a 100 GW target by 2030, up from just under 40 GW currently. Kim Sung-hwan, minister of climate, energy and environment, said solar projects are being prepared nationwide, while substantial capacity in the Honam region is awaiting grid connections. The government has worked since the ministry launched last year to address regulatory and grid barriers, including solar setback rules, the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), community solar income programs and use of existing transmission lines. Officials expect projects enabled by those changes to begin translating into capacity additions from next year, with wind development adding to the pace.
