Zano disclosed on Oct. 2, 2026 that a missing verification in Gateway Addresses, introduced with Hard Fork 6, allowed an attacker to create approximately 36.9 million ZANO in separate mints on Aug. 29 and Sept. 25, as well as 1.8 quadrillion Freedom Dollar (fUSD) tokens. The unauthorized assets were indistinguishable from legitimate ZANO at the protocol level and could be spent normally, although only a small fraction reached secondary markets because of limited exchange liquidity. Zano restarted the chain from block 3,833,000 through Hard Fork 7, removing about one month of history, including legitimate transactions, staking rewards and mined blocks, and disabled Gateway Addresses. The project said it would restore affected balances using its development treasury, team-member donations and committed contributions, with exchanges and payment providers manually replaying reversed withdrawals and restoring deposits.
