José Sevilla will leave his post as chairman of Unicaja at the end of his term next April and will not seek re-election. His departure will be formalized at the bank’s ordinary general meeting of shareholders. Sevilla became chairman on 5 April 2024 after serving as chief executive officer of Bankia, with a mandate to restore institutional stability following the governance crisis associated with Unicaja’s merger with Liberbank. Until the meeting, he will continue performing his non-executive duties. Unicaja said the decision allows it to activate its Succession Plan early, giving the board time to choose a successor under its Succession Policy. The bank credited Sevilla and chief executive Isidro Rubiales with stabilizing governance after the March 2023 dispute involving the Málaga bloc and the Unicaja Banking Foundation.
