President Trump said the Iran war could cost Republicans control of the House, Senate or both in the November midterm elections, while arguing that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon should benefit Republicans politically. His comments followed remarks by Lara Trump, his daughter-in-law and a former cochair of the Republican National Committee, who said the conflict could cost Republicans the midterms. The war has increased economic pressure on voters through higher energy prices and inflation. Moody’s Analytics estimated in June that the conflict cost U.S. households $100 billion during its first three months, or nearly $750 per household. An Associated Press/NORC Research Center poll found that 65% of Americans blamed Trump’s policies for high prices, 73% disapproved of his handling of the economy and 69% said his economic agenda was worse than expected. Decision Desk HQ projects a 75% probability that Democrats will take the House and a 54% probability they will take the Senate.
