Google must face jury trials over allegations that it monopolized digital advertising technology markets after Judge P. Kevin Castel allowed USA Today, Daily Mail and a class of about 5,000 publishers to pursue more than US$3.2 billion in damages. The class is seeking about US$1.7 billion, while USA Today and Daily Mail can seek about US$900 million and US$600 million, respectively. USA Today separately described its worldwide damages claim as about US$1 billion before any trebling under antitrust law. Google said the ruling dismissed claims by some publishers that used a different ad-buying tool and that it would defend the remaining claims in court. The New York litigation concerns conduct also challenged by the U.S. Justice Department and states, while a Virginia judge previously found that Google illegally monopolized two advertising technology markets and ordered interoperability with rival tools without breaking up the business. Castel has not scheduled a trial date.
