Uphold announced on September 29 that its Vault assisted self-custody wallet now offers Vault Inheritance, allowing customers to designate beneficiaries for Bitcoin (BTC), XRP and Hedera (HBAR) holdings. The company says almost 4 million BTC, worth roughly $331 billion, is stranded in wallets whose owners died or lost their private keys because heirs cannot move assets without cryptographic control. Beneficiaries receive no access during the owner’s lifetime, and Uphold’s compliance team verifies legal documentation before transferring the holdings to the beneficiary’s Uphold wallet. The service costs $19.99 a month, with U.S. users receiving a free 30-day trial and existing Vault customers seeing the new plan reflected after December 31, 2026. The launch follows Kresus’s July introduction of a separate crypto inheritance service and comes as wallet providers address estate-planning challenges around self-custody.
