South Korea’s National Police Agency has opened a preliminary investigation into suspected AI-driven hacking attacks affecting six domestic banks. Shinhan Bank said an unauthorized external party obtained customer information connected to about 25,000 people, while KB Kookmin Bank and Hana Bank confirmed personal-information leaks involving 119 and 89 individuals, respectively. BNK Busan Bank reported exposed information involving outsourced employees, while Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank said suspected attacks were blocked without confirmed leaks. The intrusions targeted employee, sales-support and other peripheral systems rather than core banking networks. Investigators found evidence on a suspected attack server of an AI agent's autonomous-penetration method, while cybersecurity specialists said AI tools can automate vulnerability searches and facilitate tailored fraud. The Financial Supervisory Service has begun an emergency on-site inspection of Shinhan, and the Financial Services Commission has ordered banks and card companies to comprehensively inspect their computer systems.
