Fideuram sent nearly €95 million abroad in 11 transfers between Feb. 23 and Feb. 25, 2026, after fraudsters used WhatsApp messages, AI-cloned voices, forged documents and fake legal emails to impersonate senior figures at Intesa Sanpaolo and A&O Shearman Italia. Investigators recovered or blocked about €55 million, while later court documents put the unresolved amount at €39.5 million; earlier reports had described at least €36 million as having entered crypto-linked channels. Authorities reconstructed one route involving about €4 million that moved through accounts in Malta, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, then a Canadian payment platform, before reaching two Bitcoin wallets. Milan prosecutors are investigating an unnamed 48-year-old Israeli citizen linked to that funds trail, while still verifying the identity documents associated with the suspect. Former Fideuram chairman Paolo Molesini, who received the initial fraudulent contact, is not under investigation and resigned in March for personal reasons.
