The Samsung Biologics labor union announced a second three-week full-scale strike beginning September 26 after post-mediation talks failed to resolve differences over wages, performance-based pay and personnel systems. The union is seeking a 6.5% basic-wage increase plus 3 million Korean won and a 3% performance-based increase, while the company is understood to have proposed 4.1% and 2.1%, respectively. The union also plans a legal struggle requiring members to complete mandatory monthly hours while declining work after leaving the office or on holidays. The dispute follows failed March mediation, partial strikes in April and the first full-scale strike in May. Samsung Biologics said the first strike caused 150 billion Korean won in losses and warned that a production stoppage could damage or require disposal of biopharmaceutical batches because they are made using living cells.
