The Financial Services Commission is reviewing all externally accessible computer systems at financial companies after a series of information leaks and cyberattacks caused additional damage at major firms including KB Kookmin and Shinhan Bank. The initiative is intended to strengthen the financial sector's joint response and prevent similar incidents from spreading. At an emergency meeting held at 3 p.m. on the 2nd at Government Complex Seoul, chaired by Secretary-General Shin Jinchang, regulators, security bodies, six major commercial banks, three card companies and industry associations discussed recent incidents, attack methods, current security conditions and response plans. The FSC, Financial Supervisory Service and Financial Security Institute have begun on-site investigations after receiving breach reports and are sharing information such as attacker IP addresses and attack methods with relevant agencies, including KISA (South Korea's internet security agency). Financial companies will review unnecessary information exposure, authentication and access-control weaknesses, and unauthenticated routes to internal data, while regulators will provide a checklist and require companies to submit or report inspection results as soon as possible. Authorities also said breached firms must promptly implement consumer protection and damage compensation measures.
