Alphabet launched Gemini 4 Argon, a flagship artificial intelligence model designed to compete with leading systems from OpenAI and Anthropic. Google says Argon supports complex software engineering, knowledge work and cybersecurity workflows and offers a 1M-token output limit. The Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index places it immediately behind Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5, while other testing found it ahead of OpenAI’s Astra and Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 on 13 of 19 metrics; analysts cautioned that benchmark results still need to translate into real-world performance. Pricing starts at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached inputs discounted 95%, although Alphabet has indicated fees will ultimately double. Access remains limited to verified cybersecurity organizations, selected cybersecurity professionals and U.S. government agencies conducting safety assessments, with no timetable for broader release. BNP Paribas and Jefferies said Google’s infrastructure, distribution, financial resources and ecosystem could support adoption, while investors are increasingly focused on Meta’s faster-growing Muse assistant and Alphabet’s paid Spark product.
