President Donald Trump is expected to appoint Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as the White House official overseeing artificial intelligence while allowing him to retain his intelligence post, CNN and other media reported. The appointment has not been formally announced, and a White House official said any announcement would come directly from Trump. Trump has proposed an AI Force modeled on the Space Force and said it would manage the fast-growing sector without regulations that could impede innovation. He gathered AI and technology executives at the White House on Tuesday to sign a commitment to self-police AI models and development. Clayton, who led the Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump's first term and later served as interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, was confirmed by the Senate in July to lead the intelligence community. He described AI as a game changer that presents both opportunity and threat during his confirmation hearing. The prospective role appears distinct from the combined crypto and AI portfolio previously held by David Sacks, whose 130-day tenure as a special government employee ended in March. The development comes amid debate over AI safety, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call for a more measured pace of development and differing responses from prominent technology executives.
