Only about 2% to 2.2% of US households were paying for AI services in April and May 2026, according to Andreessen Horowitz’s State of Markets analysis of PNC Bank transaction data. The share was close to zero in early 2023, while average monthly spending among paying customers rose to $31 in May 2026 from roughly $22 in May 2024. Bank of America data offered a somewhat higher estimate, putting the share of consumers paying for AI services at around 3% in March 2026, up about 40% from a year earlier. Enterprise adoption remains difficult to measure: about 30% of S&P 500 companies reported some measurable AI impact, but only about 2% of those companies consistently tracked relevant metrics over time. The analysis also said consumer revenue would not cover major providers’ operating costs even if AI services reached user numbers comparable to established subscriptions such as Netflix. The a16z State of Markets II report, released around September 30, 2026, said consumer revenue has so far lagged the expansion of AI infrastructure as providers add paid tiers for faster responses, stronger models and higher usage limits.
