UnitedHealth Group and Humana are discontinuing Medicare Advantage plans covering approximately 390,000 and 600,000 members, respectively, affecting more than one million seniors as insurers retreat from less profitable markets ahead of the 2027 enrollment year. Newly released government data also indicate that CVS Health's Aetna and Centene are reducing their Medicare Advantage footprints. UnitedHealthcare said affected members will receive non-renewal notices dated October 2 and can choose another Medicare Advantage plan from October 15 through December 31 for coverage beginning January 1, 2027. Members who revert automatically to original Medicare will have until February 28, 2027, to select a new Medicare Advantage plan during a special election period. Insurers are also changing their product mix: UnitedHealth is pulling back from markets with a larger share of higher-cost preferred provider organization plans, while Aetna is expanding health maintenance organization coverage. Humana said its 2027 plans will reach just over 80% of U.S. counties, down from 85% this year. Government projections based on insurer feedback put 2027 Medicare Advantage enrollment at roughly 34 million, about 6% below current levels. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services finalized a 2.48% average payment increase for 2027, or more than $13 billion in additional payments, but insurers say reimbursement has not kept pace with medical and drug costs.
