U.S. President Donald Trump pressed South Korea to invest in the $50 billion Alaska LNG (liquefied natural gas) project, saying he could double the amount charged to the country if an agreement was not reached soon. Trump did not specify the charge, which is presumed to refer to tariffs after Washington agreed to reduce tariffs on Korean goods to 15% from 25% in exchange for Korean investment in the United States. Trump had announced on Sept. 30 that the Korean government would invest in the project, but Seoul said any participation would depend on reviews of economic feasibility and other factors. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said U.S. investment projects involving Korea should benefit both countries and said the key point was that the two sides had reached an agreement.
