President Donald Trump announced the Super Intelligence Force, a federal task force led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to coordinate the government's artificial-intelligence efforts and maintain U.S. leadership in the field. The announcement did not explicitly confirm Clayton as AI czar, though The Wall Street Journal reported he is expected to receive the designation. Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor will also serve on the group. Trump said it will engage consumers, public-interest groups, religious organizations, critical-infrastructure providers and AI companies. The initiative follows a voluntary pledge signed by technology executives that includes internal controls and detection capabilities for AI developers. Trump has increasingly used the term super intelligence for AI, while arguing that the United States must stay ahead of China despite researchers' warnings that advanced systems could pose risks to humanity. Superintelligence commonly describes a hypothetical AI agent that exceeds humanity's combined cognitive abilities.
