CME Group plans to launch two compute futures contracts on Oct. 5, 2026, pending regulatory approval, as the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission prepares to seek public comment on futures linked to AI computing capacity. The consultation request is under review by the White House Office of Management and Budget, with a comment period typically lasting 30 or 60 days. The contracts would use Silicon Data benchmarks and create a public reference price for AI compute, potentially giving Bitcoin miners moving into data-center services a way to value and hedge capacity. Recent estimates put AI infrastructure spending at 2% to 2.5% of U.S. gross domestic product this year. CME’s plans coincide with a separate effort by Intercontinental Exchange to develop similar products, underscoring the push to turn computing capacity into a tradable commodity.
