President Donald Trump threatened to double agreed tariff rates on South Korea if Seoul does not soon invest in the Alaska liquefied natural gas project, intensifying pressure over a broader U.S. investment framework. The package includes up to $120 billion for eight U.S. nuclear reactors, $22.3 billion for the Encinal LNG combined-cycle power plant in Texas, an $8.4 billion enhanced oil recovery project and more than $50 billion for Alaska LNG. South Korea says the Alaska project was subject to review, commercial reasonableness and domestic legal requirements, while Washington announced it unilaterally. Bloomberg data show that tariffs were imposed, at least in part, in 15 of 72 trade-related threats made by Trump between November 2024 and October 1, a 20.8% rate. The report said the threat could reflect negotiating tactics and pressure ahead of the November midterm elections, although Trump has also discussed tariffs of up to 300% against companies that do not build factories in the United States.
