President Lee Jae-myung warned on the 4th against reform pursued for political achievement, applause, ideological display or personal attention, saying it must produce tangible improvements in people’s livelihoods and national development. In posts on X, formerly Twitter, he also criticized unsupported agitation and reckless extremism from both the left and right, while arguing that officials responsible for decisions should act and answer for results. Although Lee did not identify his targets, some observers linked the remarks to hardline ruling-party supporters opposing a personnel hearing for Kim Ji-yong, the first nominee for Serious Crimes Investigation Agency chief. Lee had defended Kim on September 30 and October 1 against criticism of his prosecutorial background. On the 5th, Lee separately backed the Ministry of Justice’s recovery of assets belonging to pro-Japanese collaborator Kim Han-gyu and pledged to continue the effort even if additional resources are required.
