Welcome Savings Bank confirmed on October 4 that a hacking attack exposed information linked to about 2,200 corporate customers, including company names, contact names, email addresses and phone numbers. The bank detected the incident during an internal inspection on October 3 and reported it to authorities, which are investigating the cause and full extent of the damage. Seven financial institutions have now reported personal information leaks, including Welcome Savings Bank, Shinhan, KB Kookmin, Hana, Busan Banks, Yegaram Savings Bank and Hyundai Capital. The financial sector believes artificial intelligence was involved in the hacking. President Lee Jae Myung ordered a thorough investigation and countermeasure planning, while Lee Eog-weon, Chairperson of the Financial Services Commission, convened the entire financial sector to review the damage and response systems.
