NEAR Intents recovered the full $3.8 million stolen in an Oct. 1 exploit, and general manager Alex Shevchenko said on Oct. 2 that the team had ended its investigation. The attacker returned the funds after Shevchenko posted Bitcoin, BNB Chain and Solana wallet addresses and set a 48-hour deadline, later opening a private communication channel. The exploit involved a bug in the interaction between the protocol’s Omni deposit and withdrawal infrastructure and its smart contract. The initial loss was limited to USDT on BNB Smart Chain, while the NEAR token, core cross-chain protocol and other applications on the network were not affected. NEAR Intents restricted 11 networks, including BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, TON and Scroll, for about 12 more hours while repairs were completed. The protocol had pledged to reimburse affected users in full and reported the incident to law enforcement. Blockchain investigator ZachXBT said the funds moved from a BNB Chain hot wallet to KuCoin before being bridged into Bitcoin, with about 34.59 BTC reaching a recovery wallet. NEAR Intents lets users specify desired trade outcomes while independent market makers called solvers execute transactions across 35 blockchains; the company says it has processed more than $30 billion in volume. NEAR Protocol fell about 6% after the incident, trading near $4.95 before settling around $4.81. The recovery followed a separate late-September episode in which NEAR Intents said its SHIELD system blocked more than $50 million in attempted transfers tied to the $387.5 million Bitget hack.
