Senator Richard Blumenthal has asked Cantor Fitzgerald to provide records on its business relationship with Tether, the issuer of USDT, including custody of reserves, compliance controls, revenue and ownership arrangements. The 13-item request was sent to Cantor Chairman Brandon Lutnick, with responses due Oct. 23. Blumenthal said Cantor’s 5% Tether stake rose from $600 million to an estimated $10 billion after Donald Trump returned to office, while Howard Lutnick received more than $250 million, including a $192 million Cantor distribution. He also requested the terms of a reported Tether loan to a trust for Lutnick’s four children, which was linked to their purchase of his Cantor stake. The letter followed a Democratic staff report finding that 84% of 846 Iran-linked crypto wallets used USDT exclusively or nearly exclusively. Tether said it froze about $550 million in Iran-linked USDT this year. The request is not a subpoena, does not accuse Cantor of violating a specific law and does not establish wrongdoing.
