US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will miss next week’s annual IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok because of domestic engagements, a US official said. Deputy Treasury Secretary Francis Brooke and Under Secretary for International Affairs Erin Browne will lead the Treasury delegation. The US plans to press for policies addressing structural imbalances, sovereign debt transparency and more effective debt-management standards, while urging the IMF and World Bank to focus on their core mandates and economic stability. Bessent’s absence comes as benchmark Treasury yields reach their highest levels in nearly 25 years and an energy shock linked to the war in the Middle East weighs on global growth. He is expected to attend the G20 leaders summit in Miami in December, after skipping last year’s G20 meetings in South Africa.
