The US Department of Justice is examining whether Binance complied with its 2023 settlement with the US government as prosecutors investigate potential Iran sanctions violations on the exchange. Tysen Duva, head of DOJ’s Criminal Division, confirmed that the department is involved in an ongoing investigation but did not say Binance had breached the agreement. The review follows a September forfeiture action seeking $61 million allegedly generated by Iranian black-market oil sales and laundered through Binance. The 2023 resolution required Binance to pay $4.3 billion, plead guilty to banking-rule violations and strengthen compliance controls, including reporting evidence or allegations of misconduct involving money laundering, banking transactions and sanctions. Binance said it is enhancing its controls and cooperating with law enforcement. A breach could expose the company to prosecution over conduct resolved by the settlement and billions of dollars in further fines, though neither Binance nor its employees have been accused of wrongdoing in the current probe.
