NTT Data Group is in the final stages of talks to build Anthropic’s first dedicated data center in Japan in Osaka, with construction costs potentially reaching 1 trillion yen, or $6.3 billion. The facility could have power intake capacity of up to 500 megawatts, and partial operations could begin as early as 2028. NTT Data and Anthropic aim to sign an agreement by the end of fiscal 2026, which ends on March 31, although negotiations remain incomplete. Anthropic would serve as the anchor customer, giving the U.S. artificial-intelligence company dedicated infrastructure in Japan. The project is part of NTT’s broader plan to increase domestic data center IT power capacity from approximately 300 MW to around 1 GW by fiscal year 2033, supported by more than $9 billion in investment. NTT opened the 30 MW Kyohanna OSK11 data center in the Kansai area in April 2026 and is deploying its AI-Optimized Wide-area Network, or AIOWN, to support low-latency AI workloads. Japan is expanding data center infrastructure as demand for generative AI computing outpaces available capacity. The project’s final cost, capacity and schedule remain subject to the outcome of negotiations, power availability, equipment supply and permitting. NTT declined to comment, while NTT Group was not immediately available for comment.
