Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is challenging President Donald Trump’s latest attempt to remove her over allegations of mortgage fraud. Her lawyer, Abbe Lowell, told the White House that Cook cannot attend a Nov. 5 hearing because she will be in Europe for financial and monetary policy meetings, making the earliest possible hearing date after the Federal Reserve’s Dec. 8-9 policy meeting. Lowell also questioned the objectivity of the White House probe and said a fair hearing would show there is no legal basis for firing Cook. Trump has sought greater control over the central bank for more than a year, arguing it has refused for political reasons to lower interest rates.
