Thai immigration police arrested a 37-year-old Chinese man identified as Wu in Bangkok over an outstanding warrant from China concerning alleged links to a loan-sharking gang and transnational money-laundering network. Investigators said the network handled more than 500 million yuan, equivalent to approximately 2.485 billion baht or $69.4 million, through more than 133 accounts. Police allege Wu recruited people to open accounts, collected their bank cards and account details, exchanged cryptocurrency and foreign currency for criminal groups, and arranged visas for members of transnational criminal networks. He was detained at a property in Bangkok's Saphan Sung district after allegedly using forged accommodation documents, changing vehicle registration plates and altering his car's color. Thailand charged him under Section 81 of the Immigration Act 1979 for overstaying by about three years and eight months and will coordinate his return to China after Thai legal proceedings. The reports do not identify the cryptocurrencies, exchanges, wallets or blockchain networks involved, or establish how much of the network's total volume was directly attributable to Wu. They also do not say he has been convicted of the alleged money-laundering offenses.
