Tens of thousands of people marched through central Lisbon on Saturday to protest Portugal’s rising living costs and worsening housing crisis, increasing pressure on the centre-right government. Portugal’s biggest union, the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP), said many tens of thousands joined the rally, while police provided no estimate. Protesters said wages were failing to keep pace with housing, food and fuel costs. Inflation reached 3.6% in September, with fuel prices up 15% year on year, while house prices have more than doubled since 2017 and rents for new leases have nearly doubled. The demonstration followed growing unrest, including the police clearance of a housing activists’ tent camp in Porto. The government said measures were already being implemented and would not be dictated by street protests.
