Starknet’s community backed research into an independent, quantum-resistant Layer 1 blockchain, with 93.52% of voting power supporting the proposal in a seven-day, non-binding governance poll that closed October 22. Approximately 3,200 votes were recorded, while an earlier account cited more than 2,800 participating wallets. The vote did not authorize leaving Ethereum, and Starknet will continue operating as an Ethereum Layer 2 unless a separate binding governance process approves a transition. StarkWare abstained from voting, while StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation will assess the technical and operational requirements of a standalone network. STRK would remain the native token, and existing Ethereum bridges are expected to stay open. A draft whitepaper is planned for November. The research is driven by concerns over Ethereum-dependent cryptography, including KZG commitments for blob data and elliptic-curve cryptography used in some bridge functions. StarkWare has set a 2027 target for quantum resistance and continues related work on Starknet and Bitcoin.
