Andreessen Horowitz plans to rename its flagship cryptocurrency investment platform from a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier, removing "Crypto" from the fund name as it expands beyond digital assets into a broader range of advanced technologies. Ali Yahya, a general partner and founding member of a16z Crypto, is expected to leave the firm to launch his own startup. The fund raised $2.2 billion in May 2026 for its fifth vehicle, compared with $4.5 billion for the fourth fund in 2022. The firm says the platform has raised $10 billion across five funds, revising the approximately $9.8 billion figure previously associated with the close of its fifth fund. Crypto Fund 5 was described as fully dedicated to crypto and focused on stablecoins, tokenized assets, on-chain lending and AI agents across seed-to-growth investments. The rebranding would broaden the platform’s stated investment mandate, while the future scope of the wider a16z crypto brand remains unclear.
