Norfolk Southern reported third-quarter net income of $759 million, or $3.37 per share, while adjusted earnings rose to $3.62 per share from $3.30 a year earlier. The result exceeded the $3.47 per-share estimate compiled by LSEG and the latest $3.48 average from six Zacks Investment Research analysts. Revenue increased to $3.53 billion, above the $3.46 billion average forecast from five Zacks analysts. Railway operating income jumped 12.9% to $3.5 billion. The Atlanta-based railroad benefited from strong freight demand as tight trucking capacity and a driver shortage shifted some shipments to rail, particularly in intermodal freight. Higher fuel costs were largely recovered through customer surcharges, although gasoline prices remained above $4 a gallon and averaged about $4.27 on Thursday, according to AAA. Norfolk Southern's adjusted operating ratio deteriorated by 280 basis points to 67.4%, indicating weaker operating efficiency than a year earlier.
