South Korea's life insurance industry supplied 6.2 trillion won ($4.6 billion) to productive finance through September this year, including 1.28 trillion won in residential real estate project financing (PF). Excluding that amount, insurers provided 4.92 trillion won, exceeding the 3.6 trillion-won target by 37%. Infrastructure accounted for 42% of the allocation, advanced future industries for 16%, and startups and venture firms for 2%. The Korea Life Insurance Association will present the results at a financial transition meeting at the Grand Lotte Hotel in Seoul's Jung-gu district on the 30th. Insurers plan to invest 23.7 trillion won in productive finance over five years, publish a white paper in December and begin issuing annual reports next year. Their inclusive finance programs include a 15 billion-won shared-growth fund supporting credit life insurance for small business owners and treatment and recovery costs for vulnerable older adults who suffer falls, free of charge. The industry also operates about 70 billion won in annual social contribution programs, including medical support for children with cancer and suicide prevention. Life insurers are seeking regulatory changes covering investment caps, subsidiary business scope, overseas bond lending and preemptive borrowing.
